About the Skatepark
The Skate Park in Review: In 1996, The Community Services Department was approached by youth skaters that wanted an area of the city designated for skateboarding.
In 1997, A basic skate park of wood and sheet metal was constructed in the decommissioned Cross St Public Pool. By the end of the summer, the skate park was shut down due to complaints and was slated for relocation.
2002-The skate park was relocated to behind the Welland Arena. In between this time the skate park was temporarily located to memorial park.
A New Skate Park The Welland MYAC has outlined a renovation of the existing Welland Skate park as it's number one priority for the 2013- 2014 term. The Welland MYAC is committed to advocating for and representing Welland Youth throughout the entire process. The Welland MYAC feels the city needs a new skatepark because of the following challenges: Insufficient
lighting, no
security system, modular worn and old equipment, the equipment is not designed for multiple uses (BMX, inline skating), lack of visual appeal, lacks the landscaping and visual elements, no washrooms, not up to par with neighboring municipalities and overall it is a safety concern. The Welland MYAC is hard at work comping up with a detailed plan on how to achieve at getting a new skate park if you would like to be a part of the process please contact the Welland MYAC as our committee will be looking for persons interested in sitting on a sub- committee to provide opinion and ideas.
